Umbria lands at Ecomondo from 8-11 November

07 - 11 November 2022

Umbria the green heart of Europe, Umbria the land of sustainability: this is the message that will be conveyed at Ecomondo, Europe's reference fair for ecological transition and circular and regenerative economy, where the Region will be present, for the first time, to recount its unique development model.

A model that aims to enhance the bioeconomy chains present in the territory, to support the integration between agriculture and industry, in an attempt to become a reference place for a new vision of economy, where it is competitive to "produce more with less."

The ambition of the regional administration is to become a true sustainability valley, which is the name of the Region's stand, located in Hall D1 - Stand 70. Here, during the four days of the fair, visitors will find moments of discussion and the presentation of activities and strategic projects, with a focus on the bioplastics supply chain. Thanks to innovation and sustainability, Umbria is home to sector leaders and companies that are acquiring increasingly important market shares. The exhibition area will host institutional players and four companies in the supply chain: Novamont, Ceplast, Polycart and Ecozema.

The official opening of the stand is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, 8 November, with an institutional event of the Umbria Region featuring President Donatella Tesei and the participation of the Councillor for Economic Development, Michele Fioroni, along with important representatives of the bioplastics supply chain, such as Catia Bastioli. The event will be an opportunity to launch Dignity - the Manifesto of the Circular Bioeconomy from Umbria for Italy, a project that sees the Region as the bearer of a proposal to the government that aims, precisely, to give autonomous and economic dignity to the bioeconomy sector, concretely recognizing it as a strategic sector for the whole country.

President Donatella Tesei stressed that "Ecomondo is an important moment in which we will present to the rest of Italy and the world the concrete meaning of being the green heart of Italy. It is important to show our territory for what it is and what it aspires to be: a place where environment and sustainability have always been distinctive aspects, and today they are becoming increasingly concretely elements on which to focus, to make the economic fabric ever more competitive."

With respect to the decision to bring the bioplastics supply chain to the fair, Councillor Michele Fioroni noted that "the biomaterials and bioplastics supply chain plays a strategic role in our region. We have industry and innovation leaders working in this area and we can aim to be a model for other regions as well." He added, "At Ecomondo we will launch an important initiative, the Bioeconomy Manifesto: a document that in the coming months will be enriched with the contribution of companies in the sector that believe in the importance of creating the conditions to make the circular bioeconomy a strategic sector for the whole country. Independent and economic dignity, protection from illegality and international dumping, policies capable of enhancing the high innovation content of the sector, strengthening of skills: these are just some elements of this manifesto, which will be refined in the coming months and presented to the government and all stakeholders at a major event in Umbria in April 2023."

The Umbria Region's participation in Ecomondo is the result of an intense collaboration between the Region and Sviluppumbria, the importance of which was highlighted by CEO Michela Sciurpa. "The presence of the Umbria Region with a collective stand at an important fair like Ecomondo is a clear sign of how much the Administration and the Development Agency are enhancing issues related to green economy and business sustainability. We will bring to the fair some particularly significant initiatives that are part of a more articulated project, promoted by the Umbria Region, which has entrusted Sviluppumbria with the role of fundamental facilitator of the ecological transition of the regional fabric in the firm belief in the competitive value of the circular economy."

Many topics will be addressed, including Bioplastics and the Challenge to Illegality, and The Umbrian Biomaterials Supply Chain - Strengths and Criticalities. The VITALITY Ecosystem of Interregional Innovation project will also presented, promoted by Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo, which will allow the University of Perugia to create a research spoke on biomaterials, in collaboration with the Region and synergy with regional policies in support of the development of the biomaterials supply chain.

Finally, the topic The importance of measuring sustainability in business: regulatory changes, vision and strategic lines will also be addressed with companies, a moment of discussion and in-depth analysis of the various methodologies applicable to measuring one's level of sustainability promoted as part of the Enterprise Europe Network of which Sviluppumbria is coordinator for Umbria Marche and Tuscany.
