A new memorandum of understanding to expand the Via di Francesco’s slow-tourism bridle trail

23 May 2018

Perugia – As part of European Green Week, new initiatives and opportunities for sustainable tourism development in Umbria will be discussed at the offices of Sviluppumbria, Via Don Bosco 11, Perugia, on 23 May 2018 at 11:00 a.m. During the event, the memorandum of understanding to expand the Via di Francesco’s slow-tourism bridle trail will be signed.

The event presenting the news has been accredited as an official event of #EUGREENWEEK, which runs from 21 to 25 May and is Europe’s main occasion to discuss and create awareness of environmental policies.

Invited speakers include: Fabio Paparelli, Vice-president of the Regional Council and Umbria Region Councillor for Tourism; Mauro Agostini, Sviluppumbria’s General Manager; Simone Fittuccia, Vice-president of the Francesco’s Ways consortium; Massimo Boni, Head of Region’s mobility infrastructure service; the Mayors of Valfabbrica, Gubbio, Assisi and Nocera Umbra (who have already signed the Memorandum) and the Mayors of Pietralunga, Foligno, Spello, Campello sul Clitunno, Trevi and Spoleto which sign on to the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding for the Via di Francesco’s slow-tourism bridle trail.

Among the types of tourism experiencing recent growth is that on horseback, which Sviluppumbria is closely following.

The municipalities of Assisi, Gubbio, Nocera Umbra, Valfabbrica entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2017 for the “Via di Francesco Bridle Trail”, promoted by Valfabbrica with the Umbria Region and Sviluppumbria.

With the desire to offer a new mode of sustainable use and low environmental impact of the Via di Francesco to passionate equestrians and as a new type of slow tourism, the protocol of understanding of 23 May will be expanded with the accession and the signing by the municipalities of Pietralunga, Spello, Foligno, Trevi, Campello sul Clitunno, and Spoleto.

The municipalities will undertake to identify and clearly mark within their territory of competence the paths that can be safely covered on horseback, indicating alternative historical, cultural and food and wine routes present on the territories crossed by the trail and to make available all useful information to welcome the equestrians and their mounts.
