Via Romea: process started for recognition as a Cultural Route of Europe

27 February 2020

The Via Romea is a traditional pilgrimage route covering more than 2200 km (from Stade to Rome) and crossing three European countries: Germany, Austria and Italy.

Thanks to the work of the two reference international associations of the Via Romea, the EAVRG (European Association of the Via Romea Germanica) and the VRG (Via Romea Germanica Association) this itinerary has started the process to achieve recognition as a European Cultural Route.

After the first inspection by the Institute of Cultural Routes in Luxembourg, on 2 April the associations will be called to report first to the Commission in Luxembourg and then in late May in Paris. The decision is expected to be announced in October 2020 during the Symposium to be held on the island of Crete.

The “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” certification is a guarantee of excellence. Through this programme, the Council of Europe offers a model of transnational cultural and tourism management and promotes synergies between national, regional and local authorities and a wide range of associations and socio-economic actors.

The Italian itinerary runs a thousand kilometres divided into 46 stages, 4 of which pass through our region: first Umbrian stage: from Pozzuolo to Paciano (21 km), second stage: from Paciano to Città della Pieve (15.6 km), third stage: from Città della Pieve to Ficulle (21.7 km) and fourth stage: from Ficulle to Orvieto (24.8 km).

Sviluppumbria has been promoting the route for years through the development and tourism promotion of the Via Romea Germanica. It is a very interesting route, which year after year attracts more and more travellers to our region, joining those of the Via di Francesco and the Franciscan Protomartyrs.
