The St. Francis Way wins prize as best European ‘Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism’

The St. Francis Way was recogonised as a best European ‘Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism’ in Cyprus, in occasion of a ceremony held 25 October. The award, in the category of pilgrimages and religious tourism, was handed by Manos Vougioukas, Secretary General of  European Cultural Tourism Network, and by Piet Jaspaert, vice-president of  Europa Nostra, one of the most important European organisations dealing with the protection of cultural heritage.

The Jury was favourably impressed by the way Sviluppumbria and Region Umbria have involved local associations in the maintenance and promotion of the St. Francis Way, offering tourists a truly sustainable way to travel in Italy.

The St. Francis Way finished ahead of the region Limburg, in Holland, second, who was won for Best Global Destination in 2016 by WTTC World Travel & Tourism Council, and the Lebaniego walk in Spain, third, that is part of the famous caminos of St.James - Santiago.
