Expo Dubai: Umbria Region bids to become Italy's Sustainability Valley

On 28 March the Italian Pavilion will host the Forum "Umbria: harmony and emotions" organised by Sviluppumbria, the Economic Development Agency of the Umbria Region

An entire day dedicated to Umbria at Expo Dubai: on 28 March, the Italian Pavilion will host the Regional Day of the Umbria Region, during which the Forum Umbria: harmony and emotions will be held.

Umbria, the green heart of Italy and historically committed to the protection of the environment, is a candidate at Expo 2020 Dubai to become the Italian laboratory of sustainability, a cornerstone of innovation involving the companies of its territory.

The Forum, moderated by journalist Maria Soave of TG1, will be an opportunity to present Umbrian excellence in various sectors, from academia to culture, from design to sport - in particular equestrian endurance, a discipline that links Umbria to Dubai with a history of relations spanning more than twenty years - in the presence of the highest institutional and academic authorities from the region and beyond. Guests will take turns discussing at thematic tables ranging from the circular economy to ecological transition, from water to natural wellbeing.

Donatella Tesei, President of the Umbria Region, said “Expo is an international showcase where we can display what our Region has to offer in terms of beauty, events and, above all, its cultural approach. It is a region that by vocation can and must play a leading role in the ecological transition, in the sustainable approach that we can no longer do without. This is a challenge that we have already begun and that we are pursuing with conviction”.

Michela Sciurpa, CEO of Sviluppumbria, said “Sviluppumbria, the Economic Development Agency of the Umbria Region, organised the Regional day of the Umbria Region at Expo 2020 Dubai with the aim of presenting to the Emirates and other countries the best opportunities for collaboration that extend from Umbria to the world. We illustrate the values of our region, the historic green heart of Italy in the centre of the Mediterranean, which today is a candidate to be a real laboratory of innovation both in traditional sectors (engineering, textiles, clothing, home furnishings, food and agriculture, arts and crafts) and in the sectors of the future (renewable energy, bio-economy, green chemistry, medicine 4.0, smart farming, design)”.

“The Regional Day at Expo Dubai will be an opportunity to tell the story of Umbria as a region historically devoted to the environment and international openness” - says Michele Fioroni, Councillor for Economic Development, Digital Innovation and Simplification of the Umbria Region - We will tell our excellence in a narrative format that brings together history, culture, skills, talents and multidisciplinary ingenuity that can become promoters of new opportunities for collaboration and experimentation. A region that is linked to the UAE by a more than twenty-year history of unique relationships in the name of equestrian endurance”.

Among the guests of the Forum - which will be opened by Donatella Tesei, President of the Umbria Region and by the greeting of Marina Sereni, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation - Paolo Glisenti, Commissioner General of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020, Nicola Lener, Ambassador of Italy in the United Arab Emirates, Michele Fioroni, Councillor for Economic Development, Innovation, Digital and Simplification of the Umbria Region, Prof.  Maurizio Servili, University of Perugia, Marco Caprai, CEO Arnaldo Caprai, Prof. Valerio de Cesaris, Rector of the University for Foreigners of Perugia, Chiara Biscarini, UNESCO Chair at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, Massimo Mercati, Managing Director of Aboca, and Costanza Laliscia, international equestrian endurance champion.

The Forum will present Green Table, the global event launched by Umbria last October with a cross-media platform that brings together international personalities from the world of design, business and culture to share their ideas, projects and concrete solutions in response to the major challenges of environmental protection and health.

To pay homage to the friendship between Umbria and the United Arab Emirates, the video Umbria - Dubai, twenty years of friendship in the name of endurance will be screened.

At the end of the event, the President of Umbria Jazz Gianluca Laurenzi will present the concert for piano solo by the top Italian jazz artist Danilo Rea, on stage with the typical sound of Umbria Jazz, the international music festival held in Perugia since 1973 and which this year will take place from 8 to 17 July. The concert will be broadcast in streaming for all international viewers.

Umbria Day at Expo 2020 Dubai will also include at 9 a.m. Italian time a session of the ITALIAN DIALOGUES of the Italian Pavilion organised by the University for Foreigners of Perugia in collaboration with Sviluppumbria, entitled University for Foreigners of Perugia: Ambassador of Italy and Umbria in the world. Italian language and culture: dialogues on humanism, communication, internationalisation and innovation. The three dialogues will involve professors, researchers, experts and students who will discuss the theme of Italian culture as a place of openness, tolerance and meeting between people of different origins, taking the form of a veritable workshop of intercultural education.
