The olive grove area is candidate for the GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) programme.

The FAO Technical Secretariat is currently evaluating the recognition of the Olive Grove Area of Assisi-Spoleto under the GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) programme.

On the website of the United Nations Organisation for Agriculture (FAO) in the section on GIAHS PROGRAMME, the Olive Grove Area is officially included among the territories awaiting for an evaluation.

This is the first Italian territory, together with other European territories, included in this special project. A unique opportunity to protect and promote the territory. Regione Umbria and Sviluppumbria played a main diplomatic role "A further step towards the goal of full environmental protection and enhancement and internationalisation of agri-food production in this part of Umbria", explains Marco Bencivenga, coordinator of the Fascia project.

The proposal of the olive grove area of Assisi-Spoleto, Umbria as a candidate for the  GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) FAO programme.
 
The proposal,  presented to the Ministry of Agriculture by the Committee of the Municipalities of  Trevi (lead partner), Assisi, Spello, Foligno, Campello sul Clitunno and Spoleto, supported by   Region Umbria and Sviluppumbria, comes immediately after the recognition as 'Rural and historical landscape' awarded by the Ministry last January.
 
The FAO GIAHS programme ia aimed at identifying, recognising and supporting the agro-culturale areas of the world, where sustainable agriculture is combined with rural development, local traditions, cultural values, biodiversity.
If the Olive grove area of Umbria will be recognised as GIHAS, it will be the first territory in Italy and Europe.
