Bio-Eco Meeting in Novi Sad

20 May 2019

The meeting of the Bioeco project held in Novi Sad (Serbia) on 13 - 14 May, as part of the International Agricultural Fair, was an opportunity for a rich and active comparison between the project partners on the results achieved and future programs.

A series of workshops over two days examined development of bioeconomy in the Adriatic-Ionian region with a focus on some interesting projects related to new bio-based materials and the exploitation of raw-secondary materials resulting from processing processes in agriculture. The topics discussed ranged from the synthesis of bio-materials (bioplastics, biopolymers, nano-cellulose), to the exploitation of byproducts from olive oil and wine processing, from the treatment of industrial sludge to the bio-valorization of aquaculture residues.

Particular attention was paid to the role that the public sector can play in supporting the development of the bioeconomy through policies aimed at stimulating specific research and development activities and by adopting virtuous procedures for the purchase of organic products (Green Public Procurement) with a certified life cycle (LCA). The participation of university professors, politicians and representatives of economic institutions has shown the strong interest that has been focused on these issues that represent fundamental challenges for a virtuous development of the economy closely related to the protection of the environment and natural resources.

The option decided towards the circular economy is now becoming more and more aware and the aim of the project is precisely to encourage the dissemination and sharing of good practices and the development of ever closer relations between the economies of the partner countries on the basis of development and integration between universities, research centres and businesses.
